Talking Therapy
Break free from stress, anxiety, depression and more
In my clinic, I help people with different challenges that life can bring. Stress, anxiety, grief, jealousy, divorce, low self esteem, existential confusion, sleep problems and more. It feels vulnerable for many to reach out for help.
You don’t have to have knowledge about psychological theories and methods to benefit from therapy. But if you are curious you can read more about my approach to talking therapy and what a session and a process may look like below.
A few words on my approach to talking therapy
I base most therapy on a new research-based paradigm for treatment of mental disorders spearheaded by two therapies called ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) and metacognitive therapy. The approach is evidence-based and has a proven and significant positive effect on a range of psychological problems like stress, anxiety and depression.
I put great emphasis on making a safe and confidential therapeutic space available, where all experiences, thoughts, fears, doubts and dreams are welcomed. I meet you without judgment. I am committed to supporting you emotionally and help you change the thought- and behavioral patterns that are preventing you from living the life you want to. I offer serious and professional sessions but also seek to establish an informal atmosphere where smiles and laughter are allowed.
Sometimes a session will happen as we go for a walk in the beautiful surroundings by my clinic near the forrest and ocean in Klampenborg. I also offer online sessions.
A peek into the therapy room
In the first session, we take a closer look at why you have come to get help. I listen to your story and tailor the methods to most effectively address your problem and help you create the change you are longing for.
If you are struggling with stress, anxiety or depression we will use dialogue and exercises to uncover the automatic thought and behavioral patterns that produce and maintain the very symptoms you desperately want to get rid of. We confront the dysfunctional strategies you have evolved over time that are now keeping you stuck and miserable.
We are evolutionarily designed to solve problems and look out for dangers. Emptying your head, getting rid of negative thoughts or willing your way to positive thinking doesn’t work. But there are other things within your control that you can do. You can learn to accept and unhook from your thoughts, feelings and bodily sensations as they come and go. To relate to them in a different way and spend less time on worry and rumination. Metaphorically, I help you realize that you cannot stop the waves but you can learn to surf. You develop new and more productive strategies for focusing your attention and handling your painful thoughts and emotions. So you may again become the boss of your own mind.
Positive effects in daily life is the real aim of therapy. We examine what is meaningful and important to you, and what it means to live according to these values. As you increase your psychological flexibility and learn to loosen the grip on your struggles, we also explore what committed actions you are ready, willing and able to take in daily life. Even if they feel challenging and uncomfortable. Because they really matter to you and help you engage more fully in life.
Depending on the severity of the problem it is possible to quite quickly (typically within 6-8 sessions) learn the tools needed to overcome the symptoms of stress, anxiety and depression. Sometimes more sessions or follow-up are needed. In certain instances other treatment modalities like body-based therapy may be relevant to bring in, to help you achieve the desired results.
Body-based Therapy
Anxiety, stress and drepression can be treated through the body
Body-based therapy is an impactful method for moving past stress, anxiety, depression and other psychological problems. I offer sessions and processes that combine bodytherapy and psychology. Here we use the body as a door for creating the changes and finding the balance that you seek in life. Contact me if you need help overcoming stress, anxiety or depression so that you may live a life with happiness and vitality.
No prerequisites or prior knowledge is needed to get started on bodybased therapy. But if you are curious you can read more about the intimate connection between body and psyche and my specific approach to bodybased sessions and processes.
A few words on the body-psyche connection
Three of the most common mental illnesses - anxiety, depression and stress - all have significant emotional and bodily symptoms. Each in their own way they illustrate the close connection between body and psyche.
People with anxiety may experience a racing heart and trembling voice. A tight knot of concern in the belly when they want to express themselves. An stinging fear in the chest, arms and legs. To avoid such uncomfortable bodily sensations and emotions they may develop dysfunctional coping strategies like trying to suppress symptoms, compulsive behavior or avoiding certain and situations.
A person with depression may feel the weight of a thousand kilos. A constant and pervasive tired numbness throughout the body. A head filled with glue and gravel of self loath, where little to no light and optimism can enter. Every minor action feels like a hard fought battle.
Many people live busy lives with work, family and lots of responsibilities. Our brains and nervous systems are constantly planning, processing information and solving problems. We feel the unbalance and stress physically and emotionally. Rumination, unease, restlessness, exhaustion, insomnia, anger, irritability. But we don’t know what to do about it.
Conventional wisdom tells us that emotions and bodily sensations simply emerge and are largely out of our control. Using a combination of my body-therapeutic educations and my toolbox as a psychologist, I take a very different stand. I use the body as a door for change.
A peek into the body-based therapy room
In a session, we first talk about your situation and what change you are longing for. As you lay down in your clothes on a massage bench we oftentimes focus on a very concrete situation from your daily life. The specific holds the whole. Via bodywork, sound, breath and dialogue, we work together to explore what is going on in your body.
Expanding your awareness of bodily sensations and emotions can be quite a vulnerable process. I am there to support and guide you every step of the way. Little by little you uncover new ways of understanding and relating to whatever is going on in your inner world of nerves, muscles, tissue, organs etc. To allow and make room for the sensations and emotions. To meet them with curiosity. Without a need to change them or make them go away.
We work with different techniques to help you understand how your bodily responses link to emotions and to deeply engrained patterns of behavior. Patterns that are meaningful because they reflect your unique qualities as a person. But may now be feeding and maintaining your current struggles.
We explore how you are not a passive receiver or victim of your sensations and emotions. Investigate how you can work with and influence them. Through breath, movement, letting go, voice and more. Not by repressing, avoiding or controlling them but by engaging with and moving them in different ways. Expanding your capacity to allow them. Learn to listen to them but hold them lightly. And through this reconnect with your ressources and qualities and develop better strategiesfor handling inner and outer challenges in life.
We round off the session by talking about how your new experiences and insights, can be carried forward and enable the changes you are looking for. And help you experience greater vitality, empowerment and freedom in life.
Practicalities
PRICE
All sessions for private clients are 1000 kr. for 60 minutes. Please note that different rates and moms (VAT) apply to business clients.
COVERAGE
I am not part of the public “sygesikring”, so regrettably you cannot use a referral from your doctor with me. On the other hand this means that I don’t have a long waiting list.
Many people have private or employer managed health insurances, with coverage for psychologist sessions. You can contact your health insurance to hear more, and ask whether you are free to choose your own psychologist. Many insurances will require the psychologist to be authorized, which I am.
“Sygesikringen Danmark” offers partial coverage for members.
PAYMENT
Payment via MobilePay, netbank or in cash.
CANCELLATION
Please communicate any cancellation or change to a booking via sms, phone or email no later than 24 hours prior to the session, so that I can offer it to another client. In case of no-show or a too late cancellation, I reserve the right to charge an amount equivalent to the session fee.
CONFIDENTIALITY AND ETHICS
As authorized psychologist I am bound by confidentiality. I live by the Ethical Principles for Nordiske Psykologer.
In Denmark “psychologist, cand.psych.” is a protected title that only university educated psychologists may use.
The title cand.psych.aut. is given to psychologists that meet the criteria for continuing education and is authorized by Psykolognævnet under Socialministeriet.
